About Bloomeria crocea (Torr.) Coville

Bloomeria crocea (Torr.) Coville grows from corms that have a fibrous outer surface. Most individual plants produce only one leaf. This species bears golden six-petaled flowers arranged in a loose umbel cluster. After fertilization of its three-lobed stigma, Bloomeria crocea develops seed capsules that hold small black seeds. These seeds take between three and four years to grow into a mature flowering plant. In the wild, Bloomeria crocea grows in full sun. It prefers porous soil and semi-dry growing conditions. Its natural range includes the Peninsular Ranges, Transverse Ranges, and southern California Coast Ranges, as well as the Channel Islands. It occurs along the southern California coast from Santa Barbara County and western Kern County, through Southern California, and extending south into Baja California.
