About Blandfordia punicea (Labill.) Sweet
Blandfordia punicea (Labill.) Sweet is a tufted perennial herb. It has flat, ribbed, strap-like leaves that are 30โ100 cm (12โ39 in) long and 6โ8 mm (0.24โ0.31 in) wide, with small teeth along the edges and often a reddish tinge. Its flowering stem is unbranched and can grow up to 1.0 m (3.3 ft) long, and it bears up to twenty bell-shaped flowers that each reach 20โ40 mm (0.79โ1.6 in) long. Each flower grows from a pedicel that is 25โ50 mm (0.98โ2.0 in) long. Stamens are attached above the middle of the flower tube. Flowers are mostly red on the outside and yellow on the inside. They are usually very prominent in their native habitat, often rising above ground-level vegetation from mid-spring to early autumn. The fruit is a capsule 25โ40 mm (0.98โ1.6 in) long, borne on a stalk about 25 mm (0.98 in) long. This species grows in button grass (Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus) and damp heath, mostly west of the line between Bruny Island and Rocky Cape.
