The scientific name of this fungus is Biscogniauxia nummularia (Bull.) Kuntze. It forms a thick, shiny black crust-shaped fruit body that grows on the bark of beech (Fagus) trees, and can be found year-round. Young specimens have a light brown outer covering that covers the fruit body. The spores of Biscogniauxia nummularia range in color from black to dark brown. This species is not edible. Biscogniauxia nummularia is a common pathogen that is specific to beech trees. It has been recorded growing across Europe and Russia.
