This species has the scientific name Birrima castanea, originally published by Goding & Froggatt in 1904. The forewing length of individuals ranges from 25 to 34 mm. Birrima castanea occurs in warm temperate coastal areas of eastern Australia. Its distribution extends from Cooloola National Park in south-eastern Queensland, south to Greater Sydney in New South Wales. Habitats associated with this species are tall wet sclerophyll forest, subtropical rainforest margins, and riparian vegetation.
