About Bipalium pennsylvanicum Ogren, 1987
Bipalium pennsylvanicum, commonly called the three-lined land planarian, is a species of land planarian that belongs to the subfamily Bipaliinae. This species is native to Asia, but it is now mostly found in Pennsylvania and the surrounding regions. Adult Bipalium pennsylvanicum can reach a length of 5.1 inches (130 mm) or longer. Their diet consists primarily of earthworms. They reproduce sexually, producing cocoons in the spring, and unlike many related planarian species, they cannot reproduce via binary fission. It is not recommended to touch these flatworms without wearing gloves, because the mucus they produce contains a toxin used to digest prey that can cause skin irritation in some people.
