About Bipalium adventitium Hyman, 1943
Bipalium adventitium, commonly called the wandering broadhead planarian, is a species of land planarian belonging to the subfamily Bipaliinae. It has been accidentally introduced to the United States, where it is classified as an invasive species. Unlike Bipalium kewense, which typically reproduces asexually through fission, Bipalium adventitium more often reproduces sexually. Current evidence suggests it has only one breeding season per year. Like most land planarians, Bipalium adventitium mates via internal fertilization when two individuals encounter one another. Females deposit eggs inside protective egg capsules. After approximately three weeks, the capsules hatch, releasing between 1 and 6 juvenile planarians.
