About Bidens tripartita L.
Bidens tripartita L. is an annual plant species that has rigid stems, fibrous roots, and a typical height of 20 to 100 centimeters. Its leaves are often deeply lobed. The plant's flower heads are discoid and do not have ray flowers, and its fruits are achenes. Bidens tripartita is native to most of Eurasia, North Africa, and North America. It has naturalized populations in Australia and on some Pacific Islands. It is considered relatively rare in southwestern British Columbia, where it was likely introduced from eastern North America and Europe. Although Bidens tripartita is rarely used for medicinal purposes today, it was once highly valued for effectively stopping blood flow. It was used as a remedy for bleeding, including bleeding from ruptured blood vessels, uterine bleeding, and conditions that cause hematuria. This species is also recorded to have styptic, astringent, antiseptic, aperient, and diaphoretic effects on the human body. Medicinal remedies made from this herb are usually prepared as tinctures and infusions.
