About Bibio xanthopus Wiedemann, 1828
Bibio xanthopus, commonly called the yellow-footed March fly, is a species of March fly in the family Bibionidae. It was first formally described by Wiedemann in 1828. It is one of the most common Bibio species found in North America. Adult individuals have a black body covered in pale-colored pile, and their legs are mostly rufous. All female individuals of this species have solid black wings. The overall size of this species varies quite a bit across individuals. Wingspans range from 5.5 mm to 9.5 mm, while adult body lengths fall between 8 mm and 11 mm. The larval maggots of this species reach 10 mm in length, have warty skin, and have a pair of posterior spiracles. These maggots feed on plant roots.
