About Betula ermanii var. lanata Regel

This content describes the variety Betula ermanii var. lanata Regel's parent species, Erman's birch (scientific name Betula ermanii). Erman's birch is a birch tree species in the family Betulaceae. This species is extremely variable in its traits, and its natural distribution covers Northeast China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East, specifically the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and Kamchatka. Erman's birch can reach a maximum height of 20 metres, or 66 feet. It is well known for its peeling bark; the bark can sometimes be removed in sheets, but it more often shreds and hangs from the trunk and lower branches. In spring, yellow-brown male catkins emerge at the same time as new leaves. Erman's birch is widely cultivated in regions outside of its natural native range. The Erman's birch cultivar 'Grayswood Hill' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
