About Betonica macrantha K.Koch

Betonica macrantha, formerly classified under the name Stachys macrantha and commonly called big betony, is a species of flowering plant belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Caucasus, northeastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran. This plant is an erect herbaceous perennial that grows to 60 cm (24 in) tall and 30 cm (12 in) wide, with scalloped cordate leaves. Through the whole summer, it produces spikes of hooded purplish-pink flowers. The Latin specific epithet macrantha translates to "large-flowered". Three of its cultivars: 'Robusta', 'Superba', and 'Violacea' have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
