About Beris vallata (Forster, 1770)

Beris vallata (Forster, 1770) is a species of soldier fly that is black and yellow in color. Its abdomen is entirely yellow, with no black bands. All of its tibiae are yellow, with black apical halves. Female wings are yellowish with a brown pterostigma, while male wings are blackish. Abdominal pubescence is black in males and yellow in females. Adult body length ranges from 5 to 6 mm. The species also has six spines that protrude from the back of the scutellum. This fly is associated with marsh and wet woodland habitats, in areas that provide moist conditions for mosses. Its larvae are often found living within mosses located close to bodies of water. Adults are found on vegetation, also near moist habitats. This species occurs across Northern, Central, and Southwest Europe, ranging north to Sweden and east to European Russia.
