About Bellapiscis medius (Günther, 1861)

Bellapiscis medius, commonly known as the twister, is a triplefin fish belonging to the family Tripterygiidae. It is commonly found along the coast of New Zealand, and reaches a total length between 5 and 10 centimeters. As an adult, this species is the only triplefin that inhabits the intertidal zone. It can be seen in tidal pools, and has adapted to survive the changes in temperature, oxygen saturation, and water acidity that come with living in this habitat. The abundance of this fish in tidal pools drops during the winter months.
