About Begonia sutherlandii Hook.fil.
Begonia sutherlandii Hook.fil., commonly called Sutherland begonia, is known as iwozya in Kimalila, Tanzania. It is a tuberous flowering perennial plant belonging to the family Begoniaceae. It grows to 0.5 metres (20 in) tall, and produces fleshy pink stems that range from 10 to 80 centimetres (4 to 31 in) long. Its leaves are typically dark green with red veining, and covered in short hairs on their undersides. The leaves are asymmetrical in shape, and have toothed margins. Throughout summer, the plant produces flowers arranged in hanging panicles. The flowers measure 20–26 millimetres (0.8–1.0 in) across, and are usually orange or orange-red, with yellow anthers. This plant is native to the southern highlands of Tanzania, where it is often found growing hanging over rocks in damp, shaded locations, or growing on trees. It also occurs naturally in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa. Begonia sutherlandii can be grown outdoors in regions that do not experience frost, and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
