Basilicum is a genus of flowering plants in the Lamiaceae family. This genus was first formally described in 1802, and holds only one currently known species: Basilicum polystachyon (L.) Moench. This species is native to a wide geographic range that includes Africa, Madagascar, southern Asia (including Saudi Arabia, India, China, Indochina, Borneo, and the Philippines, among other areas), New Guinea, Australia, and many islands located in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
