About Baryphthengus ruficapillus (Vieillot, 1818)

Baryphthengus ruficapillus, commonly called the rufous-capped motmot, measures 42 cm (17 in) in length and weighs 140 to 151 g (4.9 to 5.3 oz). Adult individuals are mostly green on their upperparts and olive-green on their underparts. Their crown and nape are rufous, and a black "mask" is edged with a turquoise border. The chest bears a black spot, a rufous band stretches across the belly, and the lower belly is blue-green. Juveniles have a similar color pattern to adults, but their plumage is duller. This species is distributed across southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and far northeastern Argentina. It lives in both primary forest and gallery forest, with gallery forest habitat mostly occurring along watercourses. Its elevation range extends from near sea level to 1,200 m (3,900 ft).
