Adult individuals of this species have strongly arched backs and a short pair of barbels located on the upper jaw at the corners of the mouth. The back of the fish ranges from light to reddish brown in color, while the sides are metallic green or yellow-green, with a brassy or golden sheen on the lower portion of the body. The belly is whitish, but turns yellow-green in males during the mating season. Females can be told apart from males by their duller body coloration and greater overall body size.
