About Barbodes sellifer Kottelat & Lim, 2021
Barbodes sellifer shares a general similar body form with other species in its genus. Its overall body color is dark yellowish brown: the back is darker than the rest of the body, and the underside is paler. The distinguishing feature of this species is a saddle-like marking on its back: a black rectangular or triangular blotch located under the dorsal fin. This blotch covers 4 to 6 scales, and extends down to the fourth lateral line scale. The darkness of this black marking can range from pale to dark, depending on the surrounding environment. This species is distributed across Singapore, the Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, and parts of Sumatra. The population on Bangka Island is small, so captive breeding efforts are underway to boost the island's population of the species. Barbodes sellifer prefers clear forest streams and pools, but it is quite adaptable to other habitats including large rivers, lakes, and even swamps. It can sometimes be found swimming alongside other cyprinid species: Barbodes lateristriga (spanner barb), Barbodes dunckeri (clown barb), and Rasbora elegans (two-spot rasbora).
