Barbodes rhombeus belongs to the binototus group, and its body measurements match those of other members of this group. Its body color ranges from light greenish brown to silver. The key identifying features of this species are a small black spot located below the dorsal fin, and a second black spot at the base of the caudal fin. Some individual specimens may also have an additional dark line that runs down the side of the body.
