About Barbatia domingensis (Lamarck, 1819)
Barbatia domingensis, commonly known as the White miniature ark clam, has been widely used for many years as the name for a marine clam species in the family Arcidae. This species was recorded along the Atlantic coast of North America, with a range extending from Cape Hatteras to the West Indies and Bermuda. However, Huber (2015, pages 367–368) found that the type material of Arca domingensis Lamarck, 1819 actually corresponds to the species that was most often referred to as Barbatia cancellaria (Lamarck, 1819) in existing literature. Huber argues that Arca domingensis should be the preferred name for this species because Arca cancellaria Lamarck, 1819 lacks a recorded type locality and has doubtful type material, despite this change conflicting with long-standing common usage. Additionally, the correct scientific name for the large, whitish Caribbean species of Acar that was previously identified as "Acar domingensis" (Lamarck, 1819) remains unresolved to date.
