About Baloskion tetraphyllum (Labill.) B.G.Briggs & L.A.S.Johnson

Baloskion tetraphyllum (Labill.) B.G.Briggs & L.A.S.Johnson is an understory perennial herb that grows 0.5 to 2 meters tall. It has semi-erect, rigid emergent culms (stems) that lose internal rigidity after repeated branching, causing the stem ends to droop. Unbranched stems are hollow at the base and measure 3 to 5 millimeters in initial diameter. This species grows in clusters that are typically over 1 meter wide, and clusters can range from very tightly packed to more spread-out bunches. Its culms are smooth, bright green, and branch repeatedly into whorls that emerge from tan-colored sheaths. Its reproductive structures are narrow tan spikelets clustered at the ends of branches; these are its flowers, and a single branch can hold 15 to 450 spikelets. Two similar species can be easily distinguished from B. tetraphyllum with careful observation. The closely related Baloskion australe has completely erect stems that do not branch into feathery tassels like B. tetraphyllum, and it is smaller overall, reaching only 0.35 to 1 meter tall. The subspecies Meiostachyum of B. tetraphyllum is even more closely related; it is smaller, grows in warmer climates ranging from southeast Queensland to northeast New South Wales, and produces a higher number of spikelets, between 200 and 450. Baloskion tetraphyllum grows in swampy habitats including stream banks and wetlands. It grows well in disturbed areas, and is often found growing along carpark edges and beside walking trails. It tolerates both sand and peat soils, and has a widespread distribution along the eastern coast of Australia, ranging continuously from Queensland to Tasmania. In Tasmania, its range is typically restricted to the west of Tyler’s Line. This species relies on wind for seed dispersal; the seeds detach along with the flower structures, which act as wings to carry seeds away from the parent plant. Baloskion tetraphyllum is an obligate seeder that generally requires fire to trigger germination, so its reproduction is far more successful after a fire passes through an area. It cannot resprout after fire and depends entirely on its seed bank for regeneration. This makes the species vulnerable when fire intervals are too short, as the seed bank cannot be replenished between fire events. Baloskion tetraphyllum is an attractive grass-like plant often grown as an ornamental garden species, and its stems are sold for use as cut flowers. It has also been used for wetland restoration and mine site rehabilitation. Due to the species’ specific fire-related reproductive needs and finicky propagation requirements, researchers have tested multiple methods to improve propagation success, and the resulting findings have made commercial production of this species much easier.
