This species, Balaenoptera edeni Anderson, 1879, is commonly known as Eden's whale. There are multiple anatomical differences between Bryde's whales and Eden's whales, but morphological similarities between the two have caused confusion over correct species identification. For Bryde's whales, individuals breed once every two years. Breeding can apparently occur in any season, though it peaks in autumn. The gestation period for Bryde's whales is estimated to be 12 months. Newborn Bryde's whale calves measure 3.4–4.0 m (11–13 ft) in length at birth and weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). Bryde's whales reach sexual maturity between 8–13 years of age, when females reach a length of 12 m (39 ft). Calves are nursed by their mother for 6–12 months.
