Zeugodacus tau, which has the scientific synonym Bactrocera tau, is commonly known as the pumpkin fruit fly or the tau fruit fly. It is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Tephritidae. This species is native to tropical and subtropical Asia, and it is classified as a major pest of melons and other cucurbits. In 2023, the tau fruit fly was detected in California. In response to this detection, the California Department of Food and Agriculture established a quarantine covering part of Los Angeles County.
