About Bactris major Jacq.

Bactris major Jacq. is a small to medium-sized spiny palm, growing between 1 and 10 meters tall. Its natural distribution stretches from Mexico, through Central America, into northern South America and Trinidad. This species is split into three or four varieties, though the boundaries between these varieties are not always clearly defined. The fruits of Bactris major Jacq. are eaten, or used to add flavor to drinks. In Spanish, this palm species is known by the common name marayaú.
