About Bacillus rossius (Rossi, 1790)

Bacillus rossius (Rossi, 1790), commonly known as the European stick insect, European stick bug, European walking stick, or Mediterranean stick insect, is a species of stick insect common in southern Europe. This species is endemic to the northwestern Mediterranean, found particularly in Italy, Spain, Southern France, and the Balkans. After a female B. rossius lays its seed-like eggs, nymphs hatch between 8 weeks and 2 months later. Like adult B. rossius, nymphs sway to mimic a breeze, a behavior used to avoid predators. B. rossius can live up to one year. They are nocturnal: they may stay still for hours, and typically feed during the night. They shed their exoskeleton several times over the course of their lifespan.
