About Babiana blanda (L.Bolus) G.J.Lewis

Babiana blanda is a perennial flowering geophyte that belongs to the genus Babiana, and is a component of renosterveld vegetation. This species is endemic to the Western Cape, where its distribution extends from Darling to Milnerton and Agter-Paarl. Its total range covers less than 63 km², and it is split into just two fragmented subpopulations. The species has already lost 80% of its original habitat to urban development and crop cultivation. For some time, B. blanda was thought to be extinct, until these two existing subpopulations were rediscovered in 2006 and 2007. Invasive plants also pose an additional threat to the species.
