About Avenula pubescens (Huds.) Dumort.

Avenula is a genus of Eurasian flowering plants that belongs to the grass family. More than 100 names have been proposed for species, subspecies, varieties, and other infraspecific taxa within this genus, but only a single species is currently accepted. All other proposed names are treated as synonyms of other accepted plant names. The only recognized species in the Avenula genus is Avenula pubescens (Huds.) Dumort., which is commonly called downy oat-grass or downy alpine oatgrass. This species is native to Europe and Asia, ranging from Iceland and Portugal east to Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Siberia. It has also become naturalized in scattered locations across North America, found in the U.S. states of Connecticut, Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Vermont, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Several other genera now include species that were previously placed within Avenula: these genera are Helictochloa, Helictotrichon, and Tricholemma.
