About Automeris io Fabricius, 1775

Imagines, the sexually mature reproductive adult stage of Automeris io, have a wingspan of 2.5–3.5 inches (63–88 mm). This species shows clear sexual dimorphism. Males have bright yellow forewings, bodies, and legs, and much larger plumose (feathery) antennae than females. Females have reddish-brown to purple forewings, bodies, and legs. Both sexes have one large black to bluish eyespot with a white center on each hindwing. Some hybridizations have produced variations in these hindwing eyespots. Adult Automeris io live for 1–2 weeks.
