About Austrophlebia costalis (Tillyard, 1907)
Austrophlebia costalis, commonly known as the southern giant darner, is a species of dragonfly in the family Aeshnidae. It is endemic to eastern Australia. This is an enormous dark-colored dragonfly, with prominent yellow markings across its body and a brown band running along the leading edge of each of its wings. It lives in streams, and can often be found on logs located in shady areas. This species is thought to be one of the fastest flying odonates: an old reference claims to have measured an individual flying at nearly 60 miles per hour, or 97 km/h, but this measurement has not been confirmed by modern research.
