About Aurelia labiata Chamisso & Eysenhardt, 1821

Aurelia labiata Chamisso & Eysenhardt, 1821 is a species of moon jellyfish, a cnidarian that belongs to the family Ulmaridae. This species is typically larger than the related species Aurelia aurita; documented individuals have reached up to 45 cm (18 in) in size. Much of Aurelia labiata's size range overlaps with that of A. aurita, which grows up to 40 cm (16 in), so size is not a reliable characteristic for identifying the two species. Most Aurelia labiata have a 16-scalloped bell, meaning the bell curves inward at 16 distinct points, though this trait is also found in other species within the Aurelia genus. Aurelia labiata is native to the northeastern Pacific Ocean, where its range extends from the northern coast of California northward through Canada into Alaska.
