This species, scientifically named Auplopus carbonarius (Scopoli, 1763), reaches approximately 10 millimetres (0.39 in) in total length, while males measure around 8 millimetres (0.31 in). Males can be distinguished by the presence of ivory-coloured maculae located alongside their eyes. It inhabits woodland areas, particularly woodlands with water courses and marshy regions; these locations provide the wet mud and clay the species uses to build nests. Its known distribution includes eastern United States, eastern Canada, south eastern England, central Europe, and Scandinavia.
