About Aulax pallasia Stapf

This upright shrub, Aulax pallasia Stapf, grows from a single stem and reaches up to 3.0 m (9.8 ft) tall, with only a small number of twigs on its trunk. The species is able to resprout after fire. Aulax pallasia is bisexual, with male and female flowers produced on separate individual plants. Flowering occurs from January to April, and pollination is carried out by a range of different insect species. After flowering, female flowers dry out and develop into a woody structure that forms and holds the plant's seeds. Seeds are dispersed by wind. In Afrikaans, this species is called Naaldblaarkanariebos. The species has a wide distribution, occurring from Piketberg and Koue Bokkeveldberg to Hottentots Hollandberg and Groenlandberg, and extending to the central part of the Langeberg and the Riviersonderendberg. It grows in mountainous habitats in sandstone soil, at altitudes between 800 and 2,000 m (2,600 to 6,600 ft).
