About Aulacomnium turgidum (Wahlenb.) Schwägr.
Aulacomnium turgidum, commonly known as swollen thread-moss or mountain groove-moss, is a moss species belonging to the family Aulacomniaceae. This species has been recorded in the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland, Norway, and Scotland. It was extirpated from England in 1878, and has not reestablished a population there since then. Its shoots grow up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) tall. The leaf scales are blunt, concave, 2.5 to 3 millimeters long, and densely overlapping on the shoots. This dense arrangement gives the shoots a characteristic swollen, turgid appearance. It is visually similar to Aulacomnium palustre, the circumboreal ribbed bog moss. Aulacomnium turgidum grows on alkaline substrates in open habitats including ledges and crags, most often in alpine environments.
