About Aulacomnium heterostichum (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp.
Aulacomnium heterostichum has the synonym Arrhenopterum heterostichum. It is commonly known as goose-egg moss or star moss, and is a moss species belonging to the family Aulacomniaceae. This species grows in two widely separated regions: eastern North America, which includes eastern United States and Canada, and eastern Asia, which includes China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East. Within its North American distribution, it most often grows on slopes directly on soil, and occasionally grows at the bases of trees. The common name goose-egg moss comes from the egg-shaped leaf clusters that form at the ends of its stems. These clusters detach to grow into new individual plants, acting as a form of asexual reproduction for the species.
