About Atriplex pacifica A.Nelson

Atriplex pacifica A.Nelson is a species of saltbush, with the common names Davidson's saltbush, South Coast saltbush, and Pacific orach. It is native to the coastline of Southern California (including the Channel Islands) and Baja California, where it grows in saline habitats directly on the immediate coastline, such as beach bluffs. It is an uncommon species, primarily because large portions of its native habitat have been drastically altered. This plant is a mat-forming annual herb. It grows scaly, reddish green, prostrate stems that are 10 to 30 centimeters long. Its leaves are less than 2 centimeters long, usually oval, and have gray-green scaly undersides. Male flowers grow in terminal spike inflorescences that emerge from the distal ends of the branches, while female flower clusters form closer to the base of the branches.
