Atherina presbyter, commonly known as the sand smelt, is a species of marine ray-finned fish in the silverside family Atherinidae. It is native to the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Its full distribution extends from the Kattegat and Scotland in the north, south to Mauritania, and also covers the Western Mediterranean. It can be found across the Macaronesian Islands, though there are no confirmed records of it occurring in the Azores. This fish is a pelagic species that lives in coastal areas and estuaries.
