About Atalacmea fragilis (G.B.Sowerby I, 1823)

This species was originally described in French under the name Patella unguisalmae, with the accepted scientific name Atalacmea fragilis (G.B.Sowerby I, 1823). The shell of this limpet is translucent, fragile, oval-shaped, and very depressed, nearly flat. Its apex is claw-shaped, positioned far back on the shell, and marked like a small point. The shell margin is regular, thin, and smooth. The outer upper surface is covered in raised, evenly spaced concentric circles that gradually increase in size, starting very small around the apex. The inner surface of the shell is slightly concave and smooth, bordered by an emerald-green ring. The exterior of the shell is green with brown concentric circles, while the base color of the interior is lightly reddish. This attractive limpet grows to a maximum length of 18 mm, maximum width of 15.8 mm, and maximum height of 3.4 mm. This marine species is found off the coast of New Zealand.
