About Astrophytum ornatum (DC.) Britton & Rose

This cactus is solitary and cylindrical in form. On the Central Plateau, it may grow up to 2 metres (6.6 ft) tall and 30 centimetres (12 in) wide. It develops many white woolly flakes to protect itself from the sun. It flowers throughout the summer, and its canary yellow flowers measure 7 to 8 centimeters long.

In cultivation, it is a rugged plant that is resistant to root rot and easy to grow in well-drained soil. When grown in filtered light or shade, its tissue turns dark green. Established plants are cold tolerant down to 25 °F (−4 °C). Astrophytum ornatum has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
