About Asterella drummondii (Taylor) R.M.Schust. ex D.G.Long

Asterella drummondii is a liverwort that grows on soil crusts or organic material, and it can be found in both wet and dry habitats. Its vegetative body (the thallus) typically grows as a single tongue-shaped structure, though it sometimes forms a star-shaped rosette. Rosette-shaped thalli have a red or black margin that makes this species easy to identify. When the thallus dries out, it rolls inward to expose its dark, wavy margins. Fruiting bodies develop on dark stalks that sit on the surface of the thallus. These fruiting bodies hang downward, and have a white frill along their lower edge.
