Astelia nervosa, with the full scientific name Astelia nervosa Banks & Sol. ex Hook.f., is commonly called mountain astelia. It, along with several other species, is also known as bush flax. This is a herbaceous plant native to New Zealand. A. nervosa has long, flexible, leathery leaves that are colored light green and grey. Its flowers range in color from light brown to red. Mature fruits of this species are generally orange. It grows in lowland to low alpine areas, ranging from the southern North Island south to Stewart Island. This species was first described by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, published in 1853 in Joseph Dalton Hooker's work Botany of the Antarctic Voyage Volume 2. Flora Novae Zelandiae.
