About Aspatha gularis (Lafresnaye, 1840)
The blue-throated motmot, scientific name Aspatha gularis (Lafresnaye, 1840), measures 25.5 to 28.0 cm (10.0 to 11.0 in) long and weighs 56.0 to 67.3 g (1.98 to 2.37 oz). It has a long, graduated tail that, unlike the tails of most other motmots, does not have racquet-shaped tips. The sides of an adult's head are ochre, with a black "ear" spot. Most of its upper body is green, and its underparts are a paler green. Its throat is blue, with a black spot just below the blue throat patch. Juvenile blue-throated motmots are duller in color overall, and the green of their back is mixed with an olive wash.
This species is found from Oaxaca and Chiapas in Mexico, extending south and east through Guatemala and a small part of El Salvador to Honduras. In Mexico, it occurs at elevations between 1,300 m (4,300 ft) and 3,000 m (9,800 ft), while in Honduras it is not found at elevations below 1,800 m (5,900 ft).
