About Asemichthys taylori Gilbert, 1912

The spinynose sculpin, with the scientific name Asemichthys taylori Gilbert, 1912, is a species of marine ray-finned fish that belongs to Cottidae, the family of typical sculpins. This species is the only member of the monospecific genus Asemichthys. It occurs in the northeastern Pacific Ocean, ranging from Alaska southward to Washington and the San Juan Islands. Spinynose sculpins lay their eggs on the egg masses of buffalo sculpins (Enophrys bison); this behaviour is thought to be a reproductive strategy that lets the spinynose sculpin benefit from the larger buffalo sculpin’s egg-guarding behaviour.
