About Arthropodium minus R.Br.
Arthropodium minus, commonly known as the small vanilla lily, is a species of herbaceous perennial plant native to the Southern Hemisphere. It is valued as bush tucker because its roots are edible raw. It occurs across a range of habitats from coastal to alpine areas of eastern Australia, including Eucalyptus forests, woodlands, and sub-alpine meadows. It prefers drier habitats than the related species Arthropodium milleflorum. Its grass-like leaves carry a strong vanilla scent. The plant is deciduous during drought, and is able to resprout after fire. It grows to around 35 cm in height, and produces purple or pink flowers from September to December. Its fruit matures between January and February, and each fruit contains approximately 16 seeds. A. minus is grown as a garden ornamental, and can be easily cultivated from seed.
