About Arnoseris minima (L.) Schweigg. & Körte
Arnoseris is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. Its only known species is Arnoseris minima (L.) Schweigg. & Körte. This species is native to Europe, Morocco, and the Middle East, and has become naturalized in parts of northeastern North America, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. In the United States, it is commonly called dwarf nipplewort or lamb-succory; in the British Isles, its common name is lamb's succory. It is a herbaceous plant that reaches a maximum height of 30 cm and does not spread through vegetative growth. The species became extinct across the British Isles in 1971; an attempt to reintroduce it was made, and there has been one recent sighting of the plant in England. Arnoseris minima is an annual weed that grows in cornfields and fallow fields, and it prefers infertile, sandy, acidic soils. The word 'succory' is an anglicization of the French word 'cichorie', which refers to chicory. The 'lamb' in its common name indicates that this chicory is only suitable for animal consumption. The genus name Arnoseris comes from the Ancient Greek 'arnos seris', which translates to 'sheep's endive'. The species epithet 'minima' means 'small'.
