About Armeria welwitschii Boiss.
Armeria welwitschii Boiss. is a perennial evergreen subshrub that reaches up to 50 cm (20 in) in height. It produces numerous aerial branches covered with dry leaves. Its leaves are lanceolate, growing up to 10 cm (3.9 in) long and 0.7 cm (0.28 in) wide. This species has reddish pods; its scapes measure 7–30 cm (2.8–11.8 in) long and are sometimes pubescent. The flower calyx is 7–10 mm (0.28–0.39 in) long, and the flower petals range from pink to white, and are occasionally purple. Chromosome counts for this species are 2n=18 and n=9. Its flowering period occurs between February and May. In terms of distribution and habitat, Armeria welwitschii grows in sand dunes and coastal cliffs on sandy or rocky soils, ranging from Cabo Mondego south to Cascais along the central coast of Portugal. Its native habitat has a frost-free Mediterranean climate, but the species can tolerate USDA hardiness zone 6.
