About Aristolochia contorta Bunge
Aristolochia contorta, with the scientific name Aristolochia contorta Bunge, is commonly called northern pipevine, and is also known as birthwort. This species is a climbing perennial shrub. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with stout elongated rhizomes. It grows in mountain edges, fields, and forest edges in Korea, Japan, and eastern China, and is rarely found in open fields along forest edges. It grows well in sunny locations, or locations with slight or full shade, in well-drained soil. It can reach a maximum height of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in). In Korean traditional medicine prescriptions, the fruits and roots of Aristolochia contorta are used medicinally. Fruits are used to treat phlegm, asthma, hemorrhoids, and high blood pressure, while roots are used to treat enteritis, boils, and abdominal inflation.
