About Aristida lanosa Muhl. ex Elliott
Aristida lanosa Muhl. ex Elliott, commonly called woollysheath threeawn, is a perennial grass species. Its full distribution range stretches from New Jersey along the eastern coast of the United States into the southeastern region, extending south to northern Florida and westward to Texas. This species is listed as endangered in New Jersey and classified as imperiled in Arkansas. Its stems grow between 0.7 and 1.2 meters (2 feet 4 inches to 3 feet 11 inches) in height. Its leaves can reach up to 40 centimeters (16 inches) in length and 0.5 millimeters (0.020 inches) in width. The species produces brown panicles that measure 30 to 45 centimeters (12 to 18 inches) long, and it flowers from August to October. Aristida lanosa is abundant in dry soils, and can also grow in wet to well-drained loam. It has been recorded in habitats including upland longleaf pine communities and pine plantations, and it is more common in communities that have had a historical fire regime. In northern Florida, it is recognized as an indicator species for woodland communities.
