About Ariolimax californicus J.G.Cooper, 1872

When J.G. Cooper first described Ariolimax californicus in 1872, he noted that this species resembles Ariolimax columbianus, but has more numerous grooves along its back. Morphologically, the only reliable method to tell this species apart from related species is through examination of its genitalia. At the molecular level, Ariolimax californicus is genetically identical to Ariolimax dolichophallus, though the two can still be distinguished from one another by differences in their genitalia and sexual behavior.
