About Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker, 1863)

Argyrotaenia velutinana, commonly known as the red-banded leafroller moth, is a species of moth belonging to the family Tortricidae. This species is found in the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, ranging from Quebec and Ontario south to Florida, west to Texas and at least Iowa. It has also been reported from British Columbia. The wingspan of adult red-banded leafroller moths measures 13–20 millimetres, which equals 1⁄2–3⁄4 of an inch. Newly hatched (neonatal) larvae are not believed to naturally engage in egg cannibalism. However, researcher Rock was able to induce this behaviour in laboratory conditions in 1968. As the larvae develop, they feed on a wide range of plants. This includes the leaves and fruit of apple and other fruit trees, as well as spruce and various types of vegetables.
