About Argyresthia thuiella Packard, 1871

Argyresthia thuiella, commonly known as the arborvitae leafminer, thuja mining moth, or American thuja shoot moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Yponomeutidae. This moth ranges from southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States, extending south to North Carolina, west to Missouri, and north to Manitoba, with an additional isolated population located in British Columbia. The species has also been introduced to Europe, where it was introduced three separate times: the Netherlands in 1971, Germany in 1975, and Austria in 1976. Its wingspan measures approximately 8 mm. Adult moths are active in flight between May and July, with the exact timing varying by location. Larvae of Argyresthia thuiella feed on the leaves of Thuja occidentalis, along with other arborvitae species and false cypress (Chamaecyparis) species.
