About Argyresthia retinella Zeller, 1839

Argyresthia retinella Zeller, 1839 is a moth species with a wingspan of 9–10 mm. Its forewings are white with subtle greyish or light brown markings, and darker markings at the wing tip. Hindwings are gray. According to Meyrick's description, the head is white. The forewings are shining white, marked with irregular dark fuscous streaks; there is an indistinct fuscous subcostal suffusion on the anterior part, a suffused dark fuscous spot in the middle of the disc, a larger such spot towards the apex, and a black apical dot. This species is rather similar to Argyresthia thuiella and Argyresthia fundella. This moth can be found across Europe, extending through the Palearctic region to Japan and Ussuri. It is very common in the British Isles compared to other moth species. It inhabits deciduous forest environments where birch grows.
